M:Hello, this is Tom speaking. Is that Mrs. Green?
W:Yes. Hello, Tom. We haven't seen each other since your graduation. I often think of you and your
former classmates. You were one of my favorite students. How are you getting along at college?
M:Very well. I love my life here, and I am involved in many activities. We are planning to set up a new
arts and literature center here. The center is going to have three sections: a theater and dance studio, a
literature room, and an exhibition gallery. I need your help because I have no idea what we should
have in the literature room. Could you give me some suggestions?
W:Certainly. You should have works by famous writers like Jane Austen, Shakespeare, and Mark Twain,
but you should also have some newer books like Harry Potter. Books of poetry are necessary, too. I
also suggest that you set up a readers’ club.
M:That’s a good idea. I’ll make a list of the books and email it to you. Please add some others to the
list if you have time.
W:Okay, I will.
M:Thank you very much.
Text 10.
My mum always told my sister and me to help others. One day while I was walking home, I passed by an old lady who seemed to be in trouble. I turned back and asked if she was OK, she explained that she was sick and had to struggle to walk with her shopping bags. I offered to carry her things and walked her back home, but she refused because she didn’t want to give me any trouble. I told her it didn’t matter and her home was on my way home. It was a white lie. As I walked with her she talked with me and introduced herself. Then I told her my name. She asked if I knew Ray Robert. I was shocked and said yes, that was my dad. It turned out that this lady was my dad’s neighbor who had looked after my dad and his sisters when their mother died thirty years ago. My dad had often spoken of her but I had never met her as she had moved away with her family. It was a lovely moment for both of us. When I got home and told my dad about the incident, it made him cry. I was so moved. I am glad that my small active kindness meant so much to the two people.
