Text 1
M: Kathy! You look so cute in this red dress!
W: Really? Don’t you think it’s a little small for me? (1) It fit me well last year, but I gained ten pounds this summer.
Text 2
W: How are we going to the hospital to help sick people this Sunday? By bus or by bike?
M: Neither. We should walk there, I think. (2)
Text 3
M: I can’t believe it, Ashley. This may look like Paris, but we’re in Blackpool, (3) a town in northwest England. It’s only an hour’s drive from Manchester.
W: Yes, that’s right. I love the beach, the sunshine, and the fish and chips here.
Text 4
W: Here’s a ten-dollar bill. Give me one ticket for tonight’s show, please.
M: Sure. Here’s your ticket and your three dollars change. (4)
Text 5
W: It’s been raining a lot these days. Do you like the rain, Brent?
M: I don’t like it when it always rains like this. I enjoy it if it rains once a week…but never on the weekends! (5) You know we have to cancel our football match again.
Text 6
W: So, you can’t come to get me?
M: Sorry, but I have to attend an important meeting with my workmate that day. Don’t worry. My brother Mark will meet you at the airport. (6)
W: Uh, well, what does your brother look like?
M: Well, he’s very tall, he has short light brown hair, and he’s pretty thin. (7) He usually wears a white baseball cap with crazy-looking red shoes. I mean, you can’t miss him.
W: All right.
Text 7
M: Helen, I want to move into the dormitory(宿舍).
W: What’s wrong? You don’t want to get along well with Allen anymore?
M: No, it’s just that the house rent is going up and I can’t afford it anymore. (8) What’s more, campus is a little far from here.
W: Well, who will be your new roommate?
M: Andrew. He’s easy-going and always does well on his exams. (9) I can ask him for help with my classes.
Text 8
M: What do you think of this clothing store?
W: I love it! The only problem is that it’s extremely expensive.
M: Don’t worry. I’ve decided that for your birthday, I’m going to take you shopping for a new dress here.
W: Really? The last time we did that was before our wedding. (10) I thought you hated shopping. (11)
M: I do, (11) and that’s why you should appreciate this gift!
W: That’s really nice of you! Let’s go in and try some things on.
M: How about this red dress? I think it would really suit you.
W: I don’t think this color is quite right for me. Do they have the same dress in white in a size 8? (12)
M: Let’s see…they’ve got one in blue, pink, black…and white. Here you are.
W: This is perfect!
Text 9
W: Hello, is that Frank?
M: Yes.
W: Frank, you’ve won $10,000! To get your prize, you need to give me your credit card number and your address. (13) We will then send you the money right away.
M: Why would I need to give you my credit card number? That doesn’t make sense.
W: We need the number so we can put you in our computer system. Then we’re able to send you the check. (14)
M: I’m not sure about this. I’d rather just give you my address.
W: I’m sorry, sir, but we also have to have your credit card number in order to send you the money.
M: Okay, then I’m going to hang up. (16) Have a nice day.
W: Sir, wait! This is a real contest. We’d like to send you the prize money.
M: I’ve heard about this kind of contest before. This is not true. (15)
W: Sir, I’m not trying to be rude. I’m just telling you the truth.
M: I’m hanging up now. Goodbye. (16)
